CLOSURE: 30 more Beer Store locations to shut down this summer in Ontario

Following a number of Beer Store closures recently, including multiple this past Sunday, at least 30 more locations are set to shut down this summer.

The company has made announcements about three separate rounds of closures set for July and August.

The decisions come amid the expanded alcohol marketplace in Ontario.

Last year, thousands of convenience stores, as well as additional grocery stores, were permitted to start selling booze, except for spirits.

The changes expanded Ontario’s alcohol market well beyond the two main stores where consumers were previously able to purchase booze: The Beer Store and the LCBO.

A number of Beer Store locations have shut down since, with the union representing workers blaming it on the change.

In its most recent announcement issued last week, The Beer Store announced that 10 locations are set to shut down on Aug. 10.

Closures are also set to happen on July 6 and July 20.

“We made the difficult decision to close these retail locations. We will continue our focus on what we do best, ice-cold beer, great customer service and a world-class recycling program that last year returned more containers than we sold,” Ozzie Ahmed, the vice president of retail at The Beer Store, said in the announcement about the Aug. 10 closures.

“Modernizing operations in a changing marketplace is never easy, we know this will be difficult news for customers and employees.”
