“The Beer Store is modernizing operations to meet the needs of the marketplace – this means making the difficult decision to close some stores,” said Ozzie Ahmed, vice president of retail at The Beer Store. “We know this will be disappointing to many customers and our valued employees.”
Ahmed emphasized that the decision was not made lightly, noting that the closures are part of the company’s long-term plan to maintain sustainability while continuing to provide strong customer service, a wide selection of beer brands, and a globally recognized recycling system.
The company is also committing to supporting affected employees during the transition, ensuring all existing agreements and commitments are upheld.Despite the closures, The Beer Store encourages customers to return empty alcohol containers to nearby locations or designated return depots. Each year, the company processes over 1.6 billion bottles, cans, and kegs—making it one of the most successful recycling programs in the world.
Starting Jan. 1, 2026, all Ontario grocery stores that sell alcohol will also be required to accept empty returns.
The closures come as The Beer Store faces ongoing retail pressures following Ontario’s decision to expand alcohol sales to convenience stores, big-box chains, and gas stations.
