Clarington man charged with arson after a series of fires in Oshawa, Whitby and York Region

A Clarington man is facing numerous charges after allegedly setting a series of fires on the same day between Bowmanville and Stouffville.
Police started investigating on November 24 after two fires in Whitby and Oshawa were immediately found to be arson. They were set in two vehicles parked outside houses, before spreading to nearby homes.
The suspected arsonist fled the scene in a getaway car, but was tracked to Bowmanville where he was arrested on Haines Road.
Police later found the man had gone to Stouffville and Markham earlier that day. Police allege he set two additional fires in the same manner.
No one was harmed in any of the fires as the residents were able to safely evacuate. Police say the victims are known to the suspect and these were targeted incidents posing no further threat to residents.
Nicolas Coffin, 40, faces 12 charges including multiple counts of arson with disregard for human life and arson causing damage to property alongside a single charge for possession incendiary material. He will remain in custody until his bail hearing.
