The Clarington Eagles just keeping rolling along and are now one series win away from a second straight appearance in the Schmaltz Cup tournament and Ontario Junior C hockey supremacy.

The Eagles’ latest victim is their cross-county rivals from Uxbridge and Clarington – provincial finalists a year ago – disposed of the Bruins in four straight after a 3-2 overtime win last Tuesday in Uxbridge to win their second straight Cougar Cup. Clarington is now 12-0 for the post-season and will meet the Port Hope Panthers in game one of the next round Thursday night at the Garnett Rickard Arena in Bowmanville.

The series winner qualifies for the four-team Schmaltz Cup, which gets underway next month in Woodstock.

Over in the Junior A loop, Whitby’s Matthew Cato leads all playoff scorers with 11 goals and 22 points as his Trenton Golden Hawks booked their ticket into the Buckland Cup finals with a five-game series win over arch-rival Wellington Dukes.

The Vermont University-bound Cato and his ‘Hawks will meet the Collingwood Blues, sixth-ranked in the country, in the final beginning Thursday in Collingwood. The series winner heads to the Centennial Cup national championships in Portage la Prairie, MB.
