Chamber Music Society of Mississauga returns with live shows

After an absence of more than two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chamber Music Society of Mississauga (CMSM) is making a return to live performances.
The CMSM has two concerts scheduled for June: The Passion of Joan of Arc, June 11 at 9 p.m., at the First Unitarian Congregation (84 South Service Rd.); and Romantic Favourites, June 25 at 7 p.m., at the same location.
The Passion of Joan of Arc is a silent film by Carl Theodore Dreyer, with music score curated and performed by Canadian pianist Penny Johnson.
It features compositions by Philip Glass, Ludovico Eunaudi and Max Richter.
Romantic Favourites is a performance featuring American violinist Andrew Sords and Toronto-based pianist Cheryl Duvall, the latter also the CMSM’s new artistic director.
The two musicians are also longtime collaborators.
Videos
Works by Brahms, Beethoven, Sarasate, Chopin and Saint-Saens are featured in the June 25 performance.

The CMSM also recently received a grant from the Ontario government to not only recover from the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, but to position itself to thrive in the city for years to come.
The $37,900 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) late last year via the OTF’s Resilient Communities Fund came at a crucial time for the Mississauga organization, which wants to ensure it can continue to provide the city and its residents with high-quality professional music that’s accessible to all.
In addition to helping the organization rebound from economic impacts of the pandemic, the OTF grant will help equip the CMSM’s board and staff so they can implement new approaches, prepare for change and build resiliency through the development of a new strategic and succession plan, the group said earlier.
