Breakfast is considered by nutritionists to be the “most important meal of the day” and accordingly, it was a cereal company that put the Niagara Police over the top during last week’s Spring Food Drive.

Post Cereals Canada of Niagara Falls donated 250 cases of cereal during the five day (March 14-8) food drive, held by the Niagara Police out front of a dozen grocery stores shattered throughout the region.

Jason McCarthy, the Niagara Police Constable who was the Event Organizer, had nothing but praise for the cereal makers as their donation added 400 pounds of food to the totals.

McCarthy said that the nine food banks in the region targeted by the drive all collected a large number of Shreddies and Raisin Bran boxes.

“Here we go again, Day 4 of the NRPS Spring Food Drive. Delivering cereal donated from Post to all nine food banks,” said McCarthy of the donation that was so large, it literally had to be brought out on skids.

By the end of the week, Niagara Police collected 21,767 pounds of food and $12,200.16 in cash and gift card donations.

“We are so very happy with the result this year,” said McCarthy. “It really is a great feeling to be a part of this food drive, knowing that the donations will be going directly to support families in need in Niagara.”

He was quick to add, “Giving to your local food banks doesn’t have to be just during a food drive, they are great people who are willing to take donations year-round.  Please give if you can.”

The food weight eclipsed the 2021 figures (first year of the Spring Food Drive) and they collected 20,274 pounds worth of food last year. However, the cash/gift card donations were slightly higher last year at $13,354.

That’s a huge amount of “two scoops in raisins in every box.” Post Cereals Canada of Niagara Falls donated 250 cases of cereals to the 2022 Niagara Police Spring Food Drive.
