A celebration focused on Indigenous food and culture will be held at Milton’s Crawford Lake Conservation Area Sunday.

The Milton location will host its second annual Indigenous food sovereignty celebration on Sept. 4 with events throughout the day to celebrate Indigenous food and the opening of the expanded medicine garden.

This year will celebrate the continued use of the Three Sisters Garden and the expansion of the Mashkiki Gitigan (medicine garden). Last year’s event marked the opening of the Mashkiki Gitigan, which was designed and planted by Miinikaan Innovation and Design.

The Mashkiki Gitigan provides traditional medicine for Indigenous community members and educational opportunities for thousands of school children each year.

Among the scheduled events are planting in the garden, speeches from Indigenous elders, big drum, dancers and Indigenous food.

Crawford Lake Conservation Area is located at 3115 Conservation Rd. from noon to 3 p.m. Space is limited and reservations must be made at their website.
