Car door secured with bungie cords leads to charge for driver in Caledon

Police have charged a do-it-yourself mechanic after stopping a car with a door secured by bungee cords and seatbelts.

The traffic stop happened on Wednesday when the OPP says officers from the Caledon detachment spotted a driver operating a vehicle that had seen some damage.

Police said one of the vehicle’s doors was secured only by bungee cords and seatbelts, and a picture of the vehicle shared by the OPP shows the jury-rigged setup.

The photo was shared on OPP social media accounts with one commenter saying the repair job is reminiscent of 1980’s TV show MacGyver and the titular character who could fix anything with his wits and a pack of chewing gum. Another poster said the driver should have used duct tape instead of bungee cords.

And while it’s almost impressive how far this driver went with the fix, the OPP says the vehicle was towed and the driver was hit with a charge of operating an unsafe motor vehicle.

The OPP regularly runs commercial and personal vehicle safety operations in and around Caledon to ensure drivers are following rules and regulations.

Anyone who witnesses an unsafe vehicle on Ontario roads can contact the OPP by calling 905-584-2241. Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
