Canada’s second-largest airline has cancelled flights from Pearson Airport in Mississauga to Europe this summer, citing staffing levels as a key contributor.

Calgary-based WestJet announced this week that flights to Europe for summer 2023 from Pearson, Vancouver and Halifax have been suspended until further notice.

Airline officials suggested that the suspension is temporary and that they will consider resuming the transatlantic service in 2024.

WestJet runs flights from Pearson and other Canadian airports to various cities across Europe.

In a news release, WestJet said the suspensions are due to “compounding factors such as staffing levels across the industry, inflation and deploying our aircraft to meet the demand of our guests while enabling us to re-position our investments to better serve Canadians for years to come.”

Airline officials said tickets for summer 2023 European routes from Halifax were never made available for sale.
