Canada-wide warrant issued for man known to frequent Durham

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a repeat offender who is a suspect in an incident from earlier this month when a Cobourg police officer was dragged by a vehicle.

Gerald Cooper, 52, is known to frequent Durham Region, as well as Cobourg, Peterborough, Brighton, Belleville and Quinte West.

Cooper, 52, who is wanted as a result of a breach of a statutory release, is currently serving a six-year sentence for break and enter, mischief over $5,000, theft over $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

He was named as a suspect in the July 6 incident after as a municipal officer was dragged by a vehicle during a traffic stop. The vehicle fled the scene. OPP subsequently arrested two people but a third – believed to be Cooper – fled on foot.

Cooper is described as white, standing five feet six inches, weighing 170 pounds, and having brown hair and brown eyes.
