Brampton officials and Peel Regional Police say security will be significantly increased at Chinguacousy Park on Canada Day, including controlled entry points and mandatory bag checks, following past incidents of disorder and fireworks-related violence during the city’s annual celebrations.

The city plans to spend more than $200,000 on enhanced security measures for this year’s event — an increase of about $80,000 compared to last year — as part of a broader effort to manage large crowds and prevent dangerous behaviour inside the park.

Police confirmed that all bags will be searched at designated entrances on July 1 as part of the updated safety plan.

“There will be checkpoints at controlled entrances and exits,” said Peel Regional Police Staff Superintendent Hubert Hiltz. “Bags will be checked when you enter.”

Attendees will be allowed to bring food and non-alcoholic beverages into the park, but alcohol and prohibited items will not be permitted.

The expanded security plan follows previous Canada Day celebrations at Chinguacousy Park that saw serious public safety concerns, including groups of young people setting off fireworks within the crowd and at each other during the evening festivities.

Video from the 2025 event showed chaotic scenes of fireworks being ignited and thrown in crowded areas as families attempted to leave the park and police moved in to regain control of the situation. Some attendees reported fireworks being set off close to strollers and young children, while online accounts described “wild fireworks flying” and people running for safety.

At least one unconfirmed report indicated a police officer may have been struck during the disorder.

The incidents prompted renewed calls from city officials for stronger crowd control, including fencing, controlled access points, increased lighting and enhanced security staffing.

Under the updated plan, controlled entry points will be set up around the park, with officers and security personnel conducting bag checks and screening attendees as they enter.

Police say officers will remain highly visible throughout the event and will monitor crowd activity using an intelligence-led policing approach.

“As with every major event, we will be present, visible, and prepared to respond,” Hiltz said.

Officials say the goal is to maintain a safe, family-friendly environment while accommodating the large crowds expected for the annual celebration.

The city is also urging attendees to plan ahead for road closures and limited parking, with shuttle services operating from Mount Pleasant GO Station, Trinity Common Mall, Sheridan College and Gore Meadows Community Centre.
