Burlington woman charged after hitting cyclist in Oakville and then fleeing

A 60-year-old Burlington woman has been charged with drunk driving after striking a male cyclist and then fleeing the scene late Thursday night in Oakville.

Halton Regional Police were notified of a collision around 9:15 p.m. on Lakeshore Road West in the area of Strathcona Avenue involving a vehicle and a bike.

A Jeep sport utility vehicle had struck a 42-year-old man on a bike and failed to remain at the scene.

Police said the cyclist was taken to Hamilton General Hospital for “head trauma.”. The injuries to the cyclist are considered serious, but non-life threatening.

Information provided a witness led police to arrest the 60-year-old female police say was identified as the driver of the Jeep.

Mary Stefanac, of Burlington, is charged with failure to stop after an accident causing bodily harm, impaired driving and having a blood alcohol concentration of 80 mg/100ml and above.

The collision is being investigated by the Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 905-825-4747, ext: 5065.
