Brooklin Fair returns June 1-4

The livestock displays and judging, the midway, the demolition derby and all the other sights and smells of a country fair return to Brooklin June 1-4 for the Brooklin Spring Fair, a late spring tradition in the north Whitby community for more than a century.
Tradition is a big deal in Brooklin and fair organizers try to bring as many of the crowd favourites back each year to the Luther Vipond Memorial Arena and adjacent Community Park for the four-day event, which attracts 30,000 people each year.
Tradition is big in the selection of this year’s Grand Marshalls as well with the selection of Ron and Maureen Jackson, whose families have been farming on Columbus Road since 1926. The Jacksons, who raise beef cattle and lambs as well as crops have been very active in the community over the past 40 years, volunteering for the Brooklin Optimist Club, local lacrosse organizations, Girl Guides of Canada and the Brooklin United Church, among others, as well as helping organize numerous events at the fair.

Daughter Nicole Scott also serves as this year’s Brooklin Spring Fair President and other family members also serve on the board.
The 2023 Brooklin Spring Fair will feature the midway, the RAM Rodeo Tour competition, a creative corner, pet show, nail driving and saw competition, the popular Truck and Tractor Pull and Demolition Derby, carriage racing and youth talent competition, as well as agriculture shows and competitions for everything from draft horses and dairy cattle to rabbits.
There will also be pie-eating contests, spelling bees, equestrian demonstrations and the annual parade and live music from bands such as The Doozies and Two For the Show.

The Brooklin Spring Fair opens Thursday, June 1, with the midway opening at 5 p.m., and closes Sunday afternoon.
The fair had its start in 1911 at Grass Park in downtown Brooklin as a one-day event and moved to Meadowcrest Farm (now the Meadowcrest subdivision) three years later before finding its permanent home in 1921. The Brooklin Fair moved to a four-day event in the early 1980s.
