3 youths arrested for carkackings

Four people including a woman from Brampton have been charged in connection to more than a dozen violent carjackings across the GTA, some of which were caught on camera.

Dubbed “Project Tyga,” Toronto Police say they began investigating after several vehicles including Porsche, Mercedes, Volkswagen, and Audi models were stolen from owners in Toronto, York Region and Peel Region.

Investigators say the accused carjackers would travel major highways within the GTA in stolen vehicles to find high-end vehicles.

The thieves allegedly followed these vehicles to an intersection or in some cases the victim’s residence and would wait for the victim to stop the vehicle before approaching and demanding they exit.

Police say most of the victims followed the carjackers’ orders, but some were “subjected to unprovoked and violent physical assaults.”

Video of one of the alleged incidents shows the occupants of a silver SUV dragging a victim away from a vehicle. The victim appears to be assaulted before the accused drives off with the stolen vehicle.

Toronto Police Service Insp. Rich Harris said the suspects “used extreme violence” during the incidents.

And while Project Tyga has resulted in 17 vehicles being recovered and multiple arrests, the carjackings are “by no means a concluded investigation.”

“I can’t get too deep into it but as it stands we are still looking for some outstanding people,” he said during a press conference on Tuesday.

Police have recovered 17 stolen vehicles with a combined value between $1 million to $1.5 million.

On April 11, 22-year-old Merrick Beddaoui and 19-year-old Christopher Ugochukwu, both of Toronto, were arrested.

The pair are facing more than 90 combined charges, including robbery with a firearm, 36 counts of robbery, and assaulting a Peace Officer.

Investigators also identified a hotel room in Mississauga linked to the suspects and seized a loaded an automatic Glock pistol, two extended prohibited magazines, a vehicle key reprograming device and other items including vehicle keys from the carjacking incidents.

Two women linked to the hotel room have also been charged.

Teianna Henry, 24, of Brampton and Delisa Miller, 24, of Toronto were arrested and charged with over a dozen combined offences including unlawful possession of a firearm.
