A 19-year-old reservist from the Lorne Scots Regiment based in Oakville died last week after collapsing during a training exercise.

A post on the Lorne Scots Facebook page said Private Connor James Beck, who graduated from Brampton’s Heart Lake Secondary School, was conducting a rucksack march during routine unit training when he started feeling unwell and collapsed.

Pte. Beck was rushed to Brampton Civic Hospital with members in his chain of command.

His parents would arrive shortly after.

“Despite the incredible effort of the hospital staff administering lifesaving measures for nearly an hour, Private Beck passed away on 12 May 2022,” said the Facebook post by Lorne Scots Regiment Commanding Officer Lt.-Col. R. Fraser.

An official statement regarding the incident has yet to be released by Canada’s Department of National Defence.

Beck, said Lt.-Col. R. Fraser, had served with the Lorne Scots Regiment since 2020.

“The unit is, understandably, in shock and struggling to understand what happened; this is true of his parents — only more so,” Lt.-Col. R. Fraser continued on the post.   “Pte. Connor Beck was a good kid, a very good kid, not yet fully trained because of the pandemic.

“Instructors from his training remember him as being committed to objectives, pure-hearted, and having strong ethical standards. Pte. Connor Beck looked to his mentors for guidance, in aspiring to a career in Policing.”

Pte. Beck completed a Police Foundation Certification at Humber College with plans to pursue a career with the police force or border services.

“Connor was simply a great young man with the world before him,” read his obituary on the Meadowvale Funeral Centre website. “He was always busy and curious, unwavering in his dependability, devotion, and dedication to those he loved.”

A funeral service for Pte. Beck will be held May 26.

“I ask for the full support of the Lorne Scots Regimental Family,” said Lt.-Col. R. Fraser. “I ask you to offer a thought in the coming days for Pte Connor Beck and his family.”
