Pvt. Connor James Beck of the Lorne Scots Regiment died on May 12, 2022, after collapsing during training.

Members of the Lorne Scots regiment are grieving after the death of a 19-year-old private from Brampton after collapsing while on exercise last week.

Pvt. Connor Beck was nearly finished a rucksack march during training when he started feeling unwell and collapsed, according to a post on the regiment’s Facebook page.

The 19-year-old from Brampton was rushed to Brampton Civic Hospital with members of his chain of command with his parents arriving shortly after.

After nearly an hour in hospital with staff administering lifesaving measures, Beck died on Thursday, May 12.

“The unit is, understandably, in shock and struggling to understand what happened,” commanding officer Lt.-Col. Robert Fraser said in the post on Facebook, describing Beck as “a very good kid.”

Fraser said Beck was “not yet fully trained because of the pandemic,” and the young man is being remembered by his instructors being “pure-hearted, and having strong ethical standards.”

Beck was interested in a career in law enforcement and reportedly completed a Police Foundation Certification at Humber College. He graduated from Brampton’s Heart Lake Secondary School in 2020.

Fraser said Canadian Armed Forces members and their family are encouraged to reach out for grievance support resources and can contact the unit’s chaplain for ongoing support.

“At this moment, I can tell you that there will be a military funeral, and if so, I ask for the full support of the Lorne Scots Regimental Family,” Fraser said.

Part of the 32nd Canadian Brigade Group, the Lorne Scots are a reserve infantry regiment which originated in Brampton in 1866 and later amalgamated with The Lorne Rifles in 1936.

The regiment encompaces Peel Region, Dufferin and Halton.
