As many of you no doubt know, Brampton’s iconic Heritage Theatre–the one that sits at 82-86 Main Street North–has been unoccupied for quite some time.
A recent city report argues that the three-story property, part of a continuous stretch of buildings known as the Heritage Theatre Block, is worthy of designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act because of its cultural value.
But while the city and residents understand the value of the classic structure, the fact remains that it’s not currently in use (or, to put a more positive spin on it, could be put to better use).
Perhaps for that reason, the city may be considering selling the theatre.
Cassandra Jasinski, heritage planner, planning and development services, recently confirmed that the city discussed the future of the theatre and verbally advised that it’s open to looking for an interested buyer for the property.
While that might sound somewhat disheartening, the city is looking for a buyer who can work well with a heritage structure.
“The city is exploring options for potential future uses of the Heritage Theatre Block, which includes the Heritage Theatre and three adjacent buildings,” says Natalie Stogdill, media coordinator, strategic communications. “The property will be listed for sale in the near future. The intent of this listing is to seek private sector or other partners that have had previous success in adapting similar properties for reuse or redevelopment.”
A report should emerge in the coming months.
“It is expected that a report will come to the Heritage Board and City Council later this spring with recommendations for the future of this property,” says Stogdill.
We will keep you updated as more details become available.
