Brampton’s push to cement its reputation as Canada’s cricket capital will be on display this summer when professional players from around the world arrive for a major tournament expected to draw fans, athletes and economic activity to the city.

The National Cricket League (NCL) 20 Canada tournament will return to Brampton from July 16 to Aug. 1, bringing six franchise teams together for a 24-match schedule that includes the hometown Brampton Blazers.

City officials and representatives from the National Cricket League formally launched the tournament this week, describing it as another step in Brampton’s efforts to become a leading destination for cricket in North America.

The event is expected to feature a combination of international cricket stars and emerging Canadian talent, while player registration remains open for athletes seeking an opportunity to compete professionally.

“NCL, in its short history, has created new standards in cricket. We are proud to reintroduce professional cricket to the City of Brampton,” NCL chairman Arun Agarwal said in a statement.

“This season promises to be the largest and most dynamic yet, with strong collaboration from the City of Brampton. We are equally committed to giving back to this vibrant city and the Province of Ontario by actively engaging local vendors, hotels and restaurants, and contributing to meaningful economic growth within the community.”

The tournament comes as Brampton continues to make significant investments in cricket infrastructure. The city has spent approximately $10 million over the past two years on improvements, including field upgrades, lighting enhancements and the expansion of facilities.

Brampton currently has 23 cricket fields and plans to add more as demand for the sport continues to grow.

Among the most anticipated projects is the Earnscliffe Park Cricket Facility, which is expected to become Brampton’s first year-round cricket venue. Additional improvements are underway at Creditview Sandalwood Park, while a joint-use cricket pitch has been developed at Turner Fenton Secondary School. A larger multi-purpose cricket facility has also been proposed as part of the City Lands development.

According to the city, more than 115 organizations use Brampton’s cricket facilities, generating over 18,000 hours of field bookings annually.

Officials say the growth of the sport extends beyond professional competition. Brampton is also expanding grassroots participation through its Youth Cricket League, sponsored by Centaur Products Inc.

The program is designed to introduce young players to cricket while helping them develop skills in a structured and community-focused environment. Registration opens June 1 through the city’s recreation portal.

This summer’s youth programs include an under-nine league running Mondays from June 29 to Aug. 31 at Blue Oak Park and an under-12 league operating Tuesdays from June 30 to Sept. 1 at the same location.
