Blueline steps into Burlington’s taxi void after recent closure of city’s only option

Blueline Taxi has stepped into the void created when Burlington Taxi unexpectedly closed up shop a couple of weeks ago.

Blueline will start to provide services to Burlington residents today. The company took advantage of Burlington politicians making amendments to the Public Vehicle By-Law to make it temporarily easier to obtain taxi licences.

“I know we all welcome the news that taxi service can resume in our community in time for the holidays.” said Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward.

“I want to thank the successful applicant for coming forward, and Burlington Taxi for their 53 years of dedicated service to our community.”

The by-law amendments are intended to provide a temporary solution. City staff are aiming to undertake a comprehensive review and consultation to not only determine appropriate taxi licensing requirements, but also to investigate the ‘rideshare’ businesses and options for regulating that market.

According to Shawna Stolte, Ward 4 councillor, there will be 13 new Blueline Taxis on local streets.

“Staff are open and eager to review additional licenses to increase this number of available taxi vehicles as multiple companies in the taxi industry continue to come forward with applications,” she said.
