Blackstock man charged twice in one day on Christmas Eve during week six of RIDE program

Durham Police’s Festive RIDE program stopped more vehicles during week six of this year’s program than last year but only charged half as many drivers with impaired driving.
One driver, however, tried to make up the difference all on his own when he was stopped and charged twice with drinking and driving in a 24-hour period.
The driver, a 65 year-old Blackstock man, was caught twice on Christmas Eve driving two different vehicles near Regional Road 19 and Old Scugog Road. Both of his vehicles were seized and he faces numerous charges.
Durham Regional Police conducted RIDE checks in Ajax, Clarington, Pickering, Port Perry, Whitby and Oshawa and stopped 813 vehicles in total, up from 770 during week six in 2020. Just 12 were given roadside tests versus two dozen last year and there were two impaired driving charges in 2021: half the number from last year. There were no three-day ‘warning’ suspensions. Last year there were two.
There were 19 people charged with various Highway Traffic Act offences (26 in 2020), four criminal code charges (seven) laid, and one (0) drug offence.
After the sixth week, the RIDE team has charged a total of 59 motorists with impaired driving offences. Last year at the same time, 47 had been charged. Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with a drinking and driving criminal offence will have his or her driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded automatically for seven days.
