John Hamilton was puzzled when the lotto machine shut down so he tried to help the cashier.

It was because he won a Lotto Max second prize worth $232,634.80 in the May 19 draw.

He went home and shared the news with his family. “They were excited for me, but they kept pretty quiet about it,” he said in a press release revealing the winner today (June 8).

With the windfall, the 72-year-old retiree has his sights set on travelling the world and helping his two children.

“I’d like to take a cruise with my wife – maybe to Iceland or Scandinavia,” he said. “It feels really nice to have this added comfort.”

He said he’s a devoted player of Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49. “I play every draw,” he said when he picked up his cheque at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.

He purchased his winning ticket at Pioneer Snack Express on Upper Paradise Road in Hamilton.
