Bids to build new Whitby Sports Complex now open

Whitby has taken a major step toward getting its new sports complex by opening the bidding for contractors to take on the job.
Work toward a new Sports Complex up in Brooklin has been underway for years. In 2020, the town’s Culture, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Strategic Master Plan found a need for new facilities.
Town feedback platforms indicated residents largely have “strong positive feelings” toward a new sports centre. Roughly 80 per cent of survey respondents strongly agreed that sports facilities were a key contributor to the quality of life in Whitby.
With this information, including respondents’ most wanted facilities, the town designed the new complex. They finalized the design in March 2022 which includes;
- an aquatic centre, featuring a ten-lane pool, second-floor viewing area and a separate lounge pool, set to be the largest pool in Durham Region
- the double gymnasium with a three-lane walking track,
- an arena with two ice pads (85′ and 190′ respectively)
- “flexible” spaces for community events, meeting and cultural/arts activities, and
- a cycling pump track,
- a skatepark,
- pickleball, tennis and basketball courts,
- a multi-use sports field
- a playground, and
- a water play area
Additionally, the facility is meant to be completely carbon neutral, eliminate fossil fuel use for heating, use renewable energy sources and avoid the use of pollutant refrigerants.
Now the town just needs someone to build it. Contractors can now submit bids to take on the project. Town staff will weigh their options over the next few months before they bring results back to council.

“I am very pleased that council has approved the final design for the Whitby Sports Complex, which allows this project to take another step forward. We know that recreation is so important to our residents. During the 2023 budget consultation, enhanced indoor and outdoor facilities was one of the top three priorities identified by the community,” said Mayor Elizabeth Roy.

The town plans to break ground on the new project later this year with a projected completion window of early 2025. It will sit just west of Baldwin St. just south of the intersection with Hwy. 407.
