A beloved local garden centre that has been open since 1891 recently announced that it’s closing down this month.

Cole’s Florist and Garden Centre, located on Main St. E. in Grimsby, is the oldest garden centre in Ontario.

In a note posted to the centre’s website, the owners said they made the difficult decision to close their business after “careful consideration and much prayer.”

“We are very thankful for all who have supported us during our time in business,” the note reads.

The business, owned and operated by the DeVries family, boasts a flower shop, garden centre, pond store and Christmas Cottage.

The flower shop, open year-round, offers pre-made bouquets, arrangements and custom orders. The garden centre is home to the largest selection of plants–think annuals, perennials and more–in the Niagara region.

The Christmas Cottage offers several holiday-themed rooms and garland, wreath and urn decorating supplies.

Cole’s last day of operations will be Aug. 12.
