A new text message scam has struck Mississauga and Brampton yet again, this time featuring the first four digits of the recipient’s bank card number.
The new scam was reported on January 4. The recipient got a text saying their RBC card starting with 4519 is on hold. However, all bank client cards start with 4519.

The message encourages the recipient to respond so they can regain access to their fund. This is a so-called Smishing scam. As typical, the number will begin to ask for further information.
Cyber security experts advise anyone who has received such a message to disregard it as any reply can signal the number is still active.
