Local police made an arrest after a 46-year-old Hamilton woman was the victim of a “brutal attack” early this week.

The woman was allegedly sexually assaulted in the “early morning hours” on Monday near the Barton St. and Emerald Ave intersection. She remains unconscious and in critical condition, according to police. Hamilton homicide detectives have taken over the investigation.

An unnamed 24-year-old Hamilton man is in police custody and will answer to charges of aggravated sexual assault. He was arrested at around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

“Investigators would like to thank the public for their assistance in this case,” said Hamilton Police in a media release. “The matter remains under investigation and if you have information you believe would be of assistance to investigators, you are encouraged to contact Detective Lisa Chambers, of the Homicide Unit at 905-546-3843.”

Police indicated that the man’s name will be released once he has been sworn into court on Thursday.
