The timeline to repair “critical” issues with the CAA Centre’s roof is being moved up and the project is expected to cost more than $3.7 million, according to a new report.
The arena was built in 1998 and still has its original roofing system, with plans for upgrade work next year. The city has already earmarked some $319,000 worth of funding for designs for the roof repair project, according to a report going to a committee of Brampton City Council on Wednesday.
But a new assessment of the arena’s roof found that delaying the replacement “poses a significant risk of interior damage.”
With “ongoing and persistent leaks” coming from the roof, the report says roofing systems over the rink “have reached a critical condition and must be
replaced promptly to prevent further building damage and operational disruptions.”
Staff called the need to speed up construction “urgent,” asking council to approve $3.7 million “to fund construction activities.”
The total project budget would be $4,019,000 if approved, the report says.
“Advancing the roof replacement project at the CAA Centre is essential to protect the facility’s structure, maintain uninterrupted operations, and ensure public safety,” the report reads, adding that approving the budget-ask “will allow the project to proceed without delay and prevent further deterioration or costly emergency repairs.”
The accelerated repairs would have a completion targeted for the second quarter of 2026.
Next year’s Capital Budget already includes a proposed top-up allocation of $3,926,000 for the CAA Centre repairs. If approved, the proposed 2026
funding will be removed “to avoid duplication,” the report reads, adding that there is “sufficient” uncommitted funds in the city’s asset repair and replacement reserve funds.
The report will go before a committee of council on Wednesday, and doesn’t say whether the repairs are expected to impact events at the CAA Centre next year.
The CAA Centre is home to the Brampton Honey Badgers, which moved from Hamilton after their home arena closed for repairs, and the Brampton Steelheads, which moved from Mississauga’s Paramount Fine Foods Centre over a reported rent hike.
