With a winter storm approaching school bus cancellations due to driver shortages have been kept to a minimum today (Feb. 22) with 25 routes cancelled affecting 14 schools.

Ten routes in Ajax and seven in Whitby will be cancelled Thursday by the First Student bus company. Eight routes in Clarington – all by Century Transport – are also axed today.

Schools affected include Julie Payette, St. Matthews the Evangelist, Fallingbrook and Robert Munsch in Whitby; Bolton Falby, Ajax High, Pickering High and Bayview Heights in Ajax; and Duke of Cambridge, St. Joseph, Courtice Intermediate, Courtice Secondary, Dr. GJ MacGillvary and Bowmanville Secondary in Clarington.

A winter storm with snow, ice pellets and possible freezing rain is on its way to Durham Region this afternoon, with as much as 15 cm of snow expected, so tomorrow’s school bus routes looks less promising and driver shortages won’t be the reason.

The snow may mix with ice pellets and freezing rain tonight. The wintry mix will taper off early Thursday morning to patchy freezing drizzle.

Another wintry mix of precipitation is possible Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening.
