If you’re concerned about the impact more businesses reopening will have on traffic, there’s good news—the 407 Express Toll Route (ETR) is expanding.

For the third consecutive year, the 407 will be expanded to improve traffic flow. The latest addition features an additional 33 kilometres in the form of an additional lane in each direction between the 401 and the 410.

These new lanes were inspected and approved for opening by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, and, with this latest expansion, the 407 has now reached 90 per cent of its maximum capacity for lanes.

Since 2001, more than 600 kilometres of new lanes have been added to the highway at no cost to the taxpayers.

Additionally, over the last 20 years, the average number of times drivers use the 407 in a day has nearly doubled—it’s increased from 237,000 in 1999 to over 408,000 last year.

“407 ETR responded quickly to the pandemic and assisted the communities we serve by donating free travel to hospital staff across the corridor and by giving $5.2 million to hospitals and United Way agencies across the GTA for emergency response and to fund the recovery into 2021 and 2022,” Javier Tamargo, president and CEO of the 407 ETR, said in a news release.

“This has been a vital time for our drivers and I am very proud of what we have been able to do on behalf of our customers, staff and the company,” he continued.
