Brampton will soon be part of the the Canadian expansion of America’s largest casual-dining chain.

A new IHOP franchise restaurant is under construction in the city, in the same plaza as the Playdium arcade. The city’s first IHOP will be located at 20 Biscayne Cres., off Steeles Avenue East close to Highway 410. An eagle-eyed Twitter user posted in-progress photos of the restaurant contruction on Monday (Feb. 28).

The IHOP (also known as International House of Pancakes) and Toronto-based K2 Group announced last summer that they were partnering on an expansion in Ontario.

The popular pancake house franchise had heretofore only had franchises on the Canadian side of the border in the tourist town of Niagara Falls, Ont., but the deal between K2 and IHOP’s parent company, Dine Brands International, calls for opening at least five new restaurants annually over the next five years.

Hamilton, Windsor and Belleville were included in the initial announcement of new IHOP locations in Ontario.

While breakfast items are IHOP’s signature dishes, it also serves lunch and dinner items. Many locations are open 24 hours per day.

The chain has more than 1,800 locations worldwide. More than 90 per cent of them are franchised and the rest are operated and owned by franchisees. In 2019, IHOP was proclaimed to be the largest casual-dining chain in the United States.
