Alleged use of fraudulent documents to open bank accounts results in arrest

A man accused of using fraudulent documents to try to open two bank accounts at different institutions has been arrested.

A man walked into a bank on Westney Rd in Ajax around 11 a.m. on January 11. Durham Regional Police allege he then tried to use fake identity documents to open an account.

Later, the man went to another bank and allegedly tried to do the same.

Once informed police launched an investigation that resulted in a search warrant. Officers use the warrant for a raid during which they say they found numerous fake documents with the suspect.

Malik Mostefai, 24 of Montreal, faces 15 total fraud charges including; fraud under $5,000, uttering a forged document, unlawful possession of a counterfeit mark and possession of forged documents with intent. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
