With freezing rain and strong winds in the area, Alectra Utilities says the Hamilton area could experience power outages on Thursday.

Alectra Utilities issued a statement Thursday, warning Hamilton area residents about potential power outages.

With Hamilton under a freezing rain warning and winds expected to reach 80 km/h, the hydro provider says power lines can become susceptible to damage.

“These potentially strong gusts could cause damage to powerlines,” says Alectra. “Areas with trees near wires should take extra precaution, as fallen limbs that contact power lines could cause extended outages in affected areas.”

Alectra says its system control centre continuously monitors weather forecasts and storm models.

“Mitigation strategies have been made to prepare line crews and additional field and communications staff to respond when the situation evolves,” they added.

In the event of downed powerlines, Alectra advises to stay at least 10 metres away — or the length of a school bus, and call 9-1-1 immediately.

Alectra customers can report outages by calling 1-833-ALECTRA.
