Ajax man latest of five charged in attempted murder and kidnapping investigation

An Ajax man has joined a group of five suspects charged in an attempted murder investigation in Kawartha Lakes that began last spring.

On April 12, 2022, OPP officers went out to a home in Eldon Township after reports of an incident involving a firearm at a rural home. Eldon sits about 15 km east of the City of Kawartha Lakes proper.

When officers arrived on the scene they found a person with unspecified life-threatening injuries. The victim was rushed to a Toronto trauma centre for treatment and pulled through.

Officers raided the home under a search warrant at the time and recovered a “large amount of evidence,” though they have not commented on what.

By April 28, the OPP had arrested four people in connection to the attack including two from Pickering.

Firstly, Mirza Beg, 26 and Sayed Sharifi, 27, both of Pickering, were each charged with conspiracy to traffic drugs and failure to comply with a probation order.

Next, Anthony Misasi, 54 of Kawartha Lakes, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit traffic drugs, 10 counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of a Schedule One substance.

Finally, Brooke Travis, 30 of Kawartha Lakes, was charged with accessory after the fact to attempted murder, accessory after the fact to robbery and accessory after the fact to kidnapping.

Months passed until Jan. 24 when the OPP announced a fifth arrest in the investigation. On Jan. 23 the Kawartha Lakes OPP Crime Unit, OPP Central Region Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) and the OPP Physical Surveillance Unit (PSU) worked together to make the arrest.

Peter Habaybeh, 48 of Ajax, was arrested and charged with attempted murder using a firearm, kidnapping with a firearm, discharging a firearm and three counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Habaybeh remains in custody pending a bail hearing. He is set to appear in a Lindsay courtroom on Jan. 24.
