A plan to allow expanded housing options near Oakville’s Sheridan College will be taking another steps towards acceptance next month.

The proposed amendments to the Official Plan and Zoning By-law will be discussed at the May 6 Planning and Development Council meeting.

“The proposed amendments would allow up to four housing units per detached residential property across the town and establish a designated Special Policy Area within 800 metres of Sheridan College,” said a Town spokesperson.

“In this specified area, townhomes and low-rise apartment style buildings will also be permitted. The changes aim to improve the availability and range of housing options in Oakville and facilitate the town’s access to funding from the federal Housing Accelerator Fund.”

More details are available on the News and Notices page on the Town’s website and the proposed amendments are available on the Housing Accelerator Fund page for public review.

Some residents in the area are opposed to the plan for reasons including fears of more traffic, changes to the character of the neighbourhood, parking woes and the potential for landlords and tenants to not maintain proper upkeep of affected properties.

Written comments can be provided by emailing [email protected] by May 3. Residents, businesses, community groups and other interested members of the public can also participate in the May 6, 2024 public meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Oakville Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road.

To register as a delegate, email [email protected] or call 905-815-6015 by noon on Friday, May 3, 2024. The public meeting will also be live streamed on the Town of Oakville’s YouTube channel.

All inputs received will be considered by the council before a decision is made.
