Active COVID-19 cases in Hamilton climbs to more than 900

Hamilton is reporting 143 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday (Dec. 21) and no new virus-related deaths.

The number of active cases in the community is now up to 927, up from 870 on Monday and the number of active outbreaks is up to 31.

Of those, 21 are in schools across the city and one is connected to a pre-game Grey Cup party held on Dec. 10 at the Corktown Pub where 10 of more than 200 reported attendees and one staff member tested positive for the virus.

The local seven-day average for new cases has increased from 113 on Monday to 126 Tuesday.

Hamilton hospitals are currently treating 33 people for COVID-19 related illnesses, of which fewer than 10 are in local ICUs.

Meanwhile, Ontario is reporting 3,453 new COVID-19 cases and 11 deaths from the virus on Tuesday.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said 805 of the cases are in people who aren’t vaccinated and 148 people have an unknown vaccination status.

The new numbers are based on 49,285 completed tests.

There were 165 people in intensive care across the province due to COVID-19 including 101 patients on ventilators.
