Major car theft ring in Mississauga and Brampton busted by cops

A major car theft ring that operated in Mississauga, Brampton and across the GTA has been busted by cops, who describe the criminal network as “prolific.”
Peel Regional Police say they’ll reveal more about the multi-jurisdictional investigation, dubbed Project R&R, at a news conference scheduled for Tuesday morning (March 21) at Peel police headquarters in Mississauga.
It’s not yet known how many people have been charged, where they’re from or how many vehicles were stolen over the course of time.
What is known at the moment is that the three-month-long police operation targeted “a prolific auto theft ring” operating in Peel and across the GTA.
While police haven’t said where, exactly, in Peel the bulk of car thefts have taken place or where the alleged ringleaders are from, an inspector from the 11 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau in west Mississauga is one of four police officials expected to address the media on Tuesday.
Peel police Chief Nishan Duraiappah is also scheduled to speak at the news conference.

Auto thefts, in many cases targeting luxury vehicles right from homeowners’ driveways in Mississauga and Brampton, and across the GTA, have been on the dramatic rise in recent years.
Police and auto industry stakeholders came together on March 10 at the Marriott Toronto Airport Hotel to form a united front against vehicle thieves in Mississauga and Brampton.
The first-ever such Auto Theft Summit sought to brainstorm new ideas, and fine-tune older strategies, in the battle against organized car crooks.
According to Peel police, there were nearly 6,000 vehicles stolen last year in Mississauga and Brampton.
And Peel police numbers also show that 474 cars were stolen in February across the two cities.
