The U.S. tariff threat will likely impact travel this March break from Ontario.

The annual school holiday is next week, from March 10 to 14 in Ontario, and many people are looking for alternatives to the traditional Florida family trip after U.S President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs.

A poll of INsauga readers found over 85 per cent of people are rethinking U.S. travel plans.

Asked if tariffs will impact their decision to travel to the United States for March break, 9,564 people (85.33 per cent) said the threat is making them rethink their trip. On the other side, 1,644 people (14.67 per cent) said they won’t change their plans.

Travel experts are reporting a similar trend. Flight Centre Travel Group Canada noted a softening in U.S. travel bookings as did travel search aggregator Skyscanner.

Travel companies have provided a few alternatives to popular U.S. March break destinations for Canadians. Skyscanner suggested Mexico rather than Florida or Montreal instead of New York.

Travel company Expedia noted searches are up for Canadian destinations such as Kamloops (+80 per cent), Charlottetown (+60 per cent), Nanaimo (+55 per cent), London (+35 per cent), Ottawa (+30 percent), or Victoria (+25 per cent).

Meanwhile, travel search aggregator, Kayak noted popular Asian cities are seeing price drops compared to last year. There is an overall drop in airfare (12 per cent year over year) for March break, but Canadians will get the best deal vacationing in Hong Kong (28 per cent drop) and Tokyo (19 per cent drop).

Domestic destinations with price drops include Edmonton, Montreal, Kelowna and Victoria, according to Kayak.
