Canadians reconsider U.S. March break travel plans after tariff spat

March break is weeks away and some Canadians are rethinking the traditional Florida holiday.

News that U.S. President Donald Trump planned to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian exports has inspired a patriotic wave across Canada.

A 30-day pause on tariffs is now on as Canada implements its $1.3-billion plan to strengthen the border and appoint a “fentanyl czar.”

But the buy-Canadian trend continues and it extends to travel. A few days ago, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged Canadians to reconsider visiting the U.S. and travel domestically instead.

“Canadians are looking for alternative March Break destinations that keep their travel dollars closer to home, or take them somewhere new entirely,” travel search aggregator Skyscanner said in a press release Wednesday.

Skyscanner provided a few alternatives to popular U.S. March break travel destinations.

Instead of Miami, travellers could go to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Flights start at $411 and hotels are just over $80 a night.

“Miami’s sun, sand, and nightlife have long been a draw, but Canadians can find the same beachfront luxury, lively bars, and oceanfront resorts in Playa del Carmen, with lower accommodation costs and no exchange rate headaches,” Skyscanner said. “Plus, the nearby cenotes and Mayan ruins offer a unique cultural twist.”

Those looking for a Disney vacation in Orlando could consider Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Flights start at just under $400 and hotels are around $100 a night.

Puerto Vallarta offers beachfront resorts with kid-friendly pools, wildlife excursions and jungle zip-lining, Skyscanner noted.

“Instead of long lines at amusement parks, visitors can experience dolphin encounters, boat tours, and a vibrant local food scene,” the travel company said.

Those looking for a big-city escape to New York might try Montreal instead. Flights start at under $300 and hotels are under $100.

“For travellers who love NYC’s energy, shopping, and culture, Montréal offers a world-class dining scene, historic neighbourhoods, and a lively arts and entertainment culture – all without currency exchange woes or border hassles,” Skyscanner noted.

Those looking for the nightlife and entertainment of Las Vegas could try Niagara Falls instead. Flights start at around $133 and hotels start at $60 a night. Of course, those in the GTA can simply hop on a GO Train.

“Las Vegas is known for its casinos, nightlife, and entertainment, but for those wanting a different kind of thrill, Niagara Falls offers world-class casinos, luxury hotels, and breathtaking natural views,” Skyscanner said. “The region also boasts incredible wineries, gourmet dining, and year-round attractions that make it a perfect getaway.”
