A 65-year-old Clarington man wanted in a voyeurism incident involving a 12-year-old boy at a Newcastle recreation centre earlier this month has been arrested.
The boy told police that while he was showering a man pulled open the privacy curtain at the Diane Hamre Recreation Centre on April 9 and after the curtain was closed, “repeatedly” opened the shower curtain until the youth left the shower.
The man then then attempted to initiate a conversation with the boy, police was told.
The victim fled the changeroom and advised a waiting parent.
Members of the East Division Criminal Investigations Branch were able to identify the suspect and on Saturday Eugene Gareau was arrested at his home and charged with ‘secretly observe/record a person nude and expose genitals to a minor for a sexual purpose.’
Police have concerns there may be other victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact D/Cst. Newman of the East Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1605. Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at http://durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
