Tragedy struck last week when a three-year-old girl, initially critically injured in a house fire in Brampton, died, according to the Ontario Fire Marshal.

Fire Marshal Jon Pegg revealed in a press conference today (June 8) that the woman who died in the incident was the child’s mother, while another individual remains hospitalized and in serious condition.

Although the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Fire Marshal Pegg said there were no smoke alarms installed on the first floor or the basement level, where the family resided.

However, smoke alarms were discovered on the second and third floors of the residence, and they are currently being examined to determine their functionality at the time of the fire.

On June 2, emergency authorities swiftly responded to a distress call at a house in the Jade Crescent and Jayfield Rd. area in Brampton.

Upon arrival, Brampton Fire Platoon Chief Michael Waite described “encountering heavy fire conditions” as fire crews valiantly worked to combat the raging blaze and rescue the occupants trapped inside the house.
