$27,000 back rent owed forces Mississauga restaurant to close

An Indian roti restaurant in the heart of Streetsville has closed, due to the apparent non-payment of rent.
Butter Chicken Roti, at 213 Queen St. S., is no longer in operation. A landlord’s termination agreement, on behalf of Bajra Investments Ltd., was recently posted inside of the front doors, saying a bailiff had taken possession of the premises. The notice stated that A-Six foods, the franchisor/tenant, was in breach of its lease in the amount of $27,384.94.
The closure was posted on r/Mississauga.
The restaurant came to the neighbourhood in mid-2019, less than a year before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the last two years, restaurants have at various times faced prohibitions and restrictions on indoor dining. The latter have included capacity limits, which were only lifted in Ontario last month.
Prior to Butter Chicken Roti’s arrival, the space at 213 Queen was occupied by a Second Cup café.

Butter Chicken Roti’s website says the chain has about 18 locations in Ontario, mostly in the GTA, with a handful in the Windsor area. The Mississauga location was still listed as of Wednesday afternoon (April 6).
