The number of vehicle thefts has climbed well above 1,000 since January in Mississauga and Brampton, with 1,248 incidents reported to police.
Residents rang in the new year with 12 vehicle thefts in the region. According to Peel Regional Police, 439 vehicles were reported stolen between Jan. 1 and Jan. 31 in Peel’s two cities. That number dropped by approximately 25 per cent in February, with 328 reported cases, before rising slightly to 338 in March.
But the downward trend may not hold. As of 12 days into April, 103 thefts have been reported and with most of the month still ahead, that number could increase significantly.
From Jan. 1 to April 12, police data indicates a combined 1,248 vehicle thefts were reported — 697 in Mississauga, 549 in Brampton, and one each in Toronto and Vaughan that fell under Peel police jurisdiction.
This averages out to more than 12 stolen vehicles per day across the region.
As of Saturday, 40 stolen vehicle cases had been successfully solved, 916 are still being investigated, and 292 were deemed unsolved. Of the stolen vehicles, 982 are cars, 16 are motorcycles, 228 are trucks and 22 are listed as “others.”

The data also highlights the top five common hotspots this month for car thefts in Peel:
- Airport Road —50 occurrences
- City Centre Drive—39 occurrences
- Courtneypark Drive—25 occurrences
- Dixie Road—40 occurrences
- Great Lakes Drive—44 occurrences

Additionally, insights into the patterns of car thefts reveal that certain areas are more vulnerable than others, prompting residents in the area to take extra precautions.
Peel police have shared helpful tips to prevent individuals from falling victim to auto thefts:
- if possible, park your vehicle in a locked garage, as the majority of the vehicles have been stolen from driveways.
- use a steering wheel lock. It will also act as a visible deterrent.
- install a lock on the data port. This simple device can be purchased online and blocks access to the computer port where the thieves gain access to reprogram the vehicle’s keys.
- consider purchasing a quality video surveillance system. Ensure cameras are properly placed and functioning for day and night use. Familiarize yourself with the system so it can be reviewed and accessed immediately.
