Mississauga $12.5 million lottery winner.

Robert McCormick woke up on the morning of March 9, checked his Lotto Max ticket and then headed out the door to work.

It’s not clear, though, if the 64-year-old construction worker from Mississauga made it to work that day — after all, the ticket he was holding was a $12.5-million top prize winner from the previous night’s draw.

“I woke up the morning after the draw and pulled up the winning numbers on my phone. I saw they matched my numbers and thought, ‘No way!’ It was hard to believe,” McCormick said while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect his huge windfall.

“I put the thought aside in my brain and headed to work,” the Mississauga man continued. “I stopped at the store on my way to work to check the ticket on the Ticket Checker. That’s when I knew it was real. I shared the news with my mom and she couldn’t wait to celebrate with me.”

McCormick said he always plays Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49 draws and this is his first major win.

“I play my own numbers. There isn’t any significance to these numbers; I just randomly selected them years ago,” he added, describing his huge stroke of luck as “amazing.”

The big winner said he plans to treat himself to a new car and a drive across Canada.

“I want to enjoy the beauty our country has to offer,” he said.

The winning ticket was purchased at Petro Canada, on Hurontario Street in Brampton.
