The city says it will be able to process more speeding tickets once the new automated speed camera processing centre opens in Brampton next year, bringing more jobs to the city.

The city says it has purchased a building in Brampton that will be transformed into a new Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Camera Processing Centre, moving the city’s ticket processing from Toronto to Brampton.

The move comes as Brampton will be expanding its stock of ASE cameras from 50 to 150 next year, and the city says the new facility will let the city process more images, help deter speeding and increase road safety, and create more revenue for the city.

“The new facility will allow us to move the city’s ticket processing from Toronto to Brampton, creating local jobs and putting the brakes on speeding in school zones,” Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said in a statement.

The city says its current ticket processing is limited by space, staffing and increasing demand, and ASE cameras can only operate at a fraction of their capacity. Some cameras run for as little as two hours each day, and the city says moving into a new dedicated ASE centre will allow for more fines and penalties for speeders.

Earlier this year, Brampton City Council approved more than $1.3 million in funding for new high-resolution traffic cameras, upgrades to camera systems at 20 locations in Brampton and more cameras at specific intersections earmarked by Peel Regional Police.

Speed limits have also dropped to 40 km/h on some Brampton roads to help make communities safer for drivers and pedestrians through the city’s new Neighbourhood Speed Safety Zones pilot project.

The city says it expects the new ASE Camera Processing Centre will open in the summer of 2024.
