Youth hockey coach charged in Ontario sexual assault case

An Oakville man involved in youth minor hockey has been charged with sexual offences after a young girl was assaulted.

The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) said its Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit arrested 25-year-old Canaan (Cane) Meister on Saturday, July 19, following an investigation into an alleged incident that occurred in late 2025.

Police say the teenage victim met with a man and was sexually assaulted.

Subsequently, Meister has been charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton.

Police said Meister is currently involved with youth minor hockey in the Oakville and Burlington areas.

Investigators have released the accused’s identity and photograph as part of the investigation and are asking anyone with information, or anyone who believes they may have been victimized, to contact the HRPS Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit at 905-825-4777 ext. 8970.

Police noted that sexual assault includes any non-consensual touching of a sexual nature and can range from unwanted touching to assaults involving penetration.

Investigators also emphasized there is no statute of limitations for reporting a sexual assault in Canada, meaning incidents can be reported regardless of how much time has passed since they occurred.
