The National Hockey League’s top draft pick, Mississauga’s Owen Power, is leaving his college career behind and is set to join the Buffalo Sabres.

Power, 19, was the first player selected in the NHL’s draft of junior players in 2021, but instead of reporting to the Sabres he chose to continue playing for the University of Michigan this season.

However, the Buffalo squad just announced the young star has signed his first professional contract. He could join the team as early as next week when the Sabres come to Toronto to play the Maple Leafs.

The 6-foot-6 defenseman showed flashes of his potential as a two way player during his second season with the Wolverines this year scoring 32 points in 33 games.

Power played for the AAA Mississauga Reps during his three-year stint in the Greater Toronto Hockey League.
