What were you doing 40 years ago tonight in Brampton?

If you were a fan of professional wrestling hopefully you were in the crowd at Brampton Memorial Arena to watch two legendary figures tangle in the ring.

The main event featured the Sheik versus Tiger Jeet Singh and while we don’t know the outcome of this particular match, chances are it would have been quite the spectacle.

The pair had grappled several times over the years even attracting a sell-out crowd of 18,000 when they were featured in the main event at Maple Leafs Gardens in 1971.

Long before the days of Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin and Brock Lesner, the Sheik was the top draw in wrestling for two decades, wowing crowds across North America and oversees as he took his bad guy antics from town-to-town squaring off against the big names of the days or the locals heroes depending on the location. The Sheik usually came out on top.

His opponent 40 year ago was a pretty-well known name in Southern Ontario as Tiger Jeet Singh developed his skills in Toronto and fought on cards at most every hometown arena as well as becoming a big star in Japan.

Very much a local legend, Singh eventually settled in Milton where, in 2010, he was honoured with a public school named after him.
