Several humps are now in place on a Mississauga street that has been deemed the “worst” for attracting aggressive drivers.
Work crews this week have been installing the traffic calming measures on Truscott Drive, which runs through the communities of Lorne Park, Clarkson and Park Royal in south Mississauga.
The humps, also known as speed cushions, are raised portions of asphalt designed to slow traffic, but still allow emergency vehicles to easily pass through without slowing down. The raised cushions do not cover the entire length of a car lane, unlike traditional speed bumps.
A raised crosswalk will also be placed along the street.
Recently, the city councillor for the area, Alvid Tedjo of Ward 2, called Truscott “the worst residential street for speeding in the entire City of Mississauga,” in a message he posted on his social media channels. “We need everyone to slow down.”
Tedjo said that drivers who travel at excessive speeds can critically injure pedestrians or other motorists if a collision occurs.
The posted speed limit on Truscott is 40 km/h, but Tedjo said drivers feel comfortable going 60 km/h, which is 50 per cent faster than the limit.
“At that speed, people have a less than 1 per cent survivability rate if they get hit by one of those speeding vehicles,” he said.
Seven speed cushions and the one raised crosswalk will be placed on Truscott, which runs between Winston Churchill Boulevard and Lorne Park Road.
This step is just one of several traffic calming projects planned for roads in the city that are meant to slow drivers down.
12 locations tapped for physical traffic calming measures:
