Woman attacked in St. Catharines park

Niagara Regional Police are investigating an incident of assault that took place in a park yesterday (July 22) in St. Catharines.

Police say they received a call at approximately 6 p.m. about a physical assault that had occurred in Malcolmson Eco Park on Lakeshore Rd. near Niagara St.

Officers of 1 District met with the victim in her 40s when they arrived at the scene. She told police she had been walking on a trail when she was approached by a man.

The man made repeated religious utterances towards the victim and threatened her. The man then proceeded to throw the woman to the ground.

Police say the woman ran and escaped into nearby bushes. The man left the area on foot, continuing into the trails and other areas of the bush.

The victim sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident and was assessed by emergency crews at the scene.

Multiple officers canvassed the area but were not able to locate the suspect.

Police say the attacker and the victim did not know each other.

The man is described as being Latino, 35-40 years old, 5-foot-3 , approximately 175 lbs with brown hair. His hair is long on the top and shorter on the sides and he has distinctive cheek bones.

The suspect was wearing a short-sleeve dress shirt with green pin stripes, dark green or brown coloured khaki shorts, and a backpack.
