A woman, age 20, riding one of Oshawa’s new e-scooters was struck and killed by a pickup truck this afternoon.

She was riding through the intersection of Harmony Rd. and Taunton Rd. shortly before 2 p.m. on May 17 when she was struck, Durham Regional Police confirmed. Investigators say they found her suffering from extensive injuries when they arrived on scene.

Paramedics rushed her to hospital where she succumbed to her wounds.

Through their investigation police learned the 2018 GMC Sierra was pulling out of the parking lot of a gas station when it struck the woman as she passed by on the sidewalk. The truck driver was not injured and remained on scene. They have not been charged with any crime.

Oshawa rolled out its e-scooter pilot at the end of April. Scooter riders are not meant to ride them on the sidewalk and must adhere to the same rules as a cyclist.

Following the crash, the Durham police Collision Investigation Unit shut down the intersection for several hours.

Anyone who witnessed the crash can call D/Cst. Rayne of the Collision Investigation Unit at 905-579-1520 or Crime Stoppers anonymously 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
