One woman is dead and a man is in hospital with critical injuries after an SUV crashed into the back of a transport truck early this morning (July 19) on Hwy. 401 in east Mississauga.

According to an OPP tweet, the two-vehicle collision occurred at about 4 a.m. in the eastbound express lanes of the highway, near Dixie Rd.

The woman, a passenger in the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man driving the SUV was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the transport truck was not injured.

The eastbound express lanes were closed for about five hours before reopening to traffic just before 9:30 a.m.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said that prior to the fatal crash, debris was being cleared from the highway following a previous collision in the area.

A transport truck was stopped while waiting for traffic to clear, police added. The SUV then crashed into the back of the large truck.

Schmidt is urging all drivers in the area to travel safely as at least one collision in the westbound lanes occurred due to distracted drivers checking out the eastbound scene.
